WRAPPED UP, TIED UP, TANGLED UP

January 21 - February 21, 2019

at Samford University - Birmingham, AL

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

I liken the creative process to the complex, laborious and life-altering process of giving birth. In many ways, this exhibition is a culmination of the past three years of gestation - that of my daughter as she literally grew inside of me, and the following two-and-a-half years of matrescence in which I’ve learned (and continue to learn) what it means to become her mother.

The exhibition gets its title from one of the many Sunday School songs I grew up singing, which speaks specifically of being simultaneously “wrapped up, tied up, tangled up in Jesus”  as well as “in God.” While the trinitarian entanglement is beautifully complex enough to begin with, in this body of work, I endeavor to imbue it with even more complexity as I weave in a sense of maternal subjectivity, which, I sense, has been buried there all along.
